why making abortions illegal is an American issue not a religious one

If you’ve been on Twitter the last few days or have tapped on any number Instagram stories or even just read/watched the news like a real adult, you’ve probably seen people arguing about the new laws in Alabama and Georgia regarding the legality of abortions. And depending on where you were looking, you have probably come across some passive aggressive witty tweets, some reposts of pictures of white men (shout out to my girl @badgalriri) or disgusting quotes about rape.

On the other side of the coin, you find people promoting pro-life and celebrating the beginning of the end of Roe v. Wade.

But what is this law everyone is making a big deal about? It’s a law that would outlaw all abortions after 6 weeks. Now if you were a woman who has a period aka menstrual cycle, you would know that that’s only TWO WEEKS after when your regular period should be on schedule. But not everyone has perfect periods. Some run late, some come early, some are just plain old irregular. This means that some of these women wouldn’t even know they were pregnant to begin with until it would be too late.

As someone who’s gone to Catholic school my entire life up until college, obviously you’re taught that it’s the “miracle of life” and that we’re made in “God’s image and likeness.” And I’m all for it. I’m down. I get it.

But I was also taught about the separation of church and state. Ever since 7th grade, I don’t think I’ve ever gotten that wrong on a test, even fill in the blank WITHOUT a word bank. And this doesn’t mean that the government can’t reference religion or say a single word about it or accommodate it if necessary, it means that ” the government does not show preference to a certain religion and that the government does not take away an individual’s ability to exercise religion.”

And why did the United States of America become America in the first place? “The Puritans and Pilgrims arrived in New England in the early 1600s after suffering religious persecution in England.” The US is KNOWN for being one big melting pot of different ideas, races, religions and cultures. America was founded on the basis of FREEDOM.

And for some reason, MEN are making the decisions for WOMEN and their bodies or anyone with a uterus for that matter. You don’t know what it’s like to carry a child and you never will??? So you can’t decide? How hard is that to comprehend?

As the great Rachel Green once said, “No Uterus, No Opinion.”

Making abortions illegal doesn’t really even help anything. We have much bigger fish to fry like, uh I don’t know, maybe the 142 mass shootings that have happened so far in the little over FIVE MONTHS OF 2019! Or climate change? Or corporations continuing to pollute the planet and use excessive plastic? How about the treatment of immigrants or black people? But nooooo let’s get to the unborn BEFORE the people actually living on this dying planet.

Making abortions illegal will simply increase the number of unsafe abortions that will be performed therefore harming the living women who simply cannot afford or take care of these babies. And when they are born, these babies will be born into homes that cannot support them or want them which may lead to abuse. And yes, you can put them up for adoption, but what about the 402,000 children living in foster care RIGHT NOW? And don’t even get me started on the rape victims who will be forced to carry, deliver, and possibly care for the children from their rapists. Yes, it can work out for some people, but what about that eleven year old girl who is forced to carry and deliver her rapist’s child?

This isn’t about whether you believe an embryo or a heartbeat or a baby once it’s born is considered life, it’s about women having the choice and the freedom to do what they want with their bodies and reproductive systems. It’s about men making these decisions and laws affecting the women around them. It’s about the freedom and the rights being taken away from these women.

Choosing to have an abortion is a hard decision to make, but it’s a decision that should be made by the woman who the pregnancy will affect.

So what can you do besides spread the word by reposting things onto your story or clicking retweet? Find petitions to sign (not Game of Thrones ones)! Find out what your state is doing about it! Support those around you and educate them! Share this post!

Agree with me? Disagree with me? Let’s discuss and educate each other in the comments! 🙂
