Hello and happy New Music Friday! Fall is here! This week’s playlist does have some upbeat bops, but it’s mostly filled with slower more chill tracks. If you’re into that, then I’m sure you’ve also probably been super excited about The Neighbourhood’s new album and Sufjan Steven’s new project, but we’ve also been blessed by an album from Sylvan Esso, Joji and Fleet Foxes too. So light a candle, get cozy under some blankets and get ready to vibe (and sweat a lot because this is Florida after all).
If you’re new here, I make weekly playlists where I pick my favorite songs from each week’s releases and I write some of my quick thoughts about them. I also curate a Spotify playlist to go along with them. I’m all about helping people find their new favorite artists and songs so if you have any suggestions let me know!
I also made an Instagram for all my music invested peeps so feel free to check it out @kasualpicks on Instagram. I’ll be sharing my favorites in each genre on that platform so feel free to check it out! On here, however, I’ll designate my top favorites with an asterisk “*”.
Here’s the best music from the week of Friday, September 25, 2020. Find the playlist HERE. Let’s get it.
INDIE & CHILL
*Revolving (feat. Marc E. Bassy): Yung Bae, Marc E. Bassy
*Sun Romance: GRMLN
*Garth: Husbands
*Cotton Candy Lemonade: Blu DeTiger
I’d love to get lost in this song forever.
*One Step Away: Moon Taxi
Chip Chrome & The Mono-Tones (album): The Neighbourhood– Pretty Boy, Lost In Translation, BooHoo, Silver Lining
The Neighbourhood reinvents their sound and their personas with this new album.
*Side of My Heart: Katelyn Tarver
This love song will transport you right to your feels today.
Nightwalk: Miirrors
Relatively new to the scene, Miirrors is a Chicago alternative group that holds nothing back when it comes to production. Their sound is atmospheric, mysterious and meticulously layered to perfection. Check out “Nightwalk” now and keep an eye out for their full-length album in early 2021.
If I Try to Find You: KiNG MALA
Unleash your inner angst with this new track from KiNG MALA. With her sultry vocals and moody instrumentation, KiNG MALA emits an honest perspective of someone who has been taken advantage of by someone they trusted.
Borderline – Blood Orange Remix: Tame Impala, Blood Orange
The Ascension: Sufjan Stevens – Video Game, Tell Me You Love Me
With his newest album since 2015, Sufjan Stevens reinvents his sound into a variety of different genre-bending tracks. Simply put, the album is dense. Personally, I don’t think my brain was/is able to comprehend it in all of its greatness.
*Looking For Me – Acoustic: Paul Woolford, Diplo, Kareen Lomax
Shore (album): Fleet Foxes – Sunblind, Can I Believe You
Our favorite Seattle folk band is back with Shore, an album that “celebrates life in the face of death.” It’s warm. It’s cozy. And it’ll feel good. Plus it’s perfect for any and all future (and present) fall playlists!
Skinny Skinny: Ashton Irwin
During quarantine, Ashton Irwin took the time away from his canceled touring schedule to create a body of work that’s all his own. The first single from his forthcoming solo album, Superbloom, is about struggles with body image and particularly body dysmorphia. Irwin wants us to live without self doubt and love ourselves for who and what we are.
Purple Everywhere: Jakob Leventhal
Some may see this new track as simply a sad one, but I think it is just beautiful. According to Leventhal, “‘Purple Everywhere’ is about a synesthetic response to painful memories in a specific location. It’s about returning to places you’ve been before under different circumstances, and reliving those memories to an almost overwhelming degree.” While we may not all have synesthesia, we can all feel the emotions through the simple piano and Leventhal’s soothing voice.
Closing Doors (ft. Astrid S): Harry Hudson, Astrid S
Nectar (album): Joji – Pretty Boy (feat. Lil Yachty), Afterthought, Your Man
With his second studio album, Joji brings us more 2 a.m.-vibing-in-your-room anthems alongside the already popular tracks “Gimme Love” and “Sanctuary.”
dropout (w/ blackbear): brakence, blackbear
POP AND BOPS
*Jackie Onassis: ELIO
In this dreamy new track named after the legendary Jackie Kennedy, ELIO wants us to take a step back and realize the world is bigger than themselves. While the lyrics may be the perfect fantasy of hopping on private jets, we all have a social responsibility.
*Keep in Touch: Jake Scott
With the soft pop of your dreams, Jake Scott comes at us this week with another song from his song-a-month series.
Simple: Duke Carpentier
In the shortest track from this week’s releases, Duke Carpentier sings about being in love and the simplicity that comes with it. Listen all the way to the end of this catchy pop song to get a hint of his funny and confident personality. Wow.
Better: ZAYN
*Room: Chaz Cardigan
Every week with every new song, I become more and more of a Chaz Cardigan stan.
*survivin’: Bastille
Need a song to give you some quarantine motivation? Bastille has got you covered.
*leave me alone!: boy pablo
*miss america: Isaac Dunbar
Block Your Number: Maude Latour
The first time I listened to the beginning of this song, I thought Lorde had blessed us with new music. Maude Latour’s metaphors and raspy voice are the perfect addition to your next playlist.
Practice Girlfriend: Erin Kirby
This new song from Erin Kirby is the perfect track for your favorite womxn empowerment playlist. Based off of a real life dating experience, “Practice Girlfriend” is an upbeat pop song that stresses not settling for anyone that does not treat you as well as you deserve.
Dumber: Emily Weisband
*all my boyfriends EP: Silver Sphere – ghosts!, handle me, glow
This new EP from Silver Sphere is simply a masterpiece. It’s a slice of pop-fection that’ll only better your weekend.
Maybe Don’t (feat. JP Saxe): Maisie Peters, JP Saxe
that’s us: Golden Vessel, The Nicholas, Rei so La
Free Love (album): Sylvan Esso – Ferris Wheel, Runaway
Used To: SAYGRACE
*Dirty: grandson
found ya: LEVI, RYANVIII, hannah hausman
*Don’t Call Me: Brando
ELECTRO DANCE + RAVE SZN
*Tu Tu Tu (That’s Why We): Galantis, NGHTMRE, Liam O’Donnell
Family Values (with Nina Nesbitt): R3HAB, Nina Nesbitt
Feel Like I Do: Vin Diesel
Vin Diesel drops his first song and honestly it’s a banger.
*You – Deluxe Mix: Lost Frequencies, Love Harder, Flynn
Emotional – Luca Schreiner Remix: Sarah Barrios, Luca Schreiner
RAP SNAP CRACKLE POP
*RIP: Arizona Zervas
Out On Bail: YG
Floor Seats II (album): A$AP Ferg – Dennis Rodman (feat. Tyga)
FRANCHISE (feat. Young Thug & M.I.A.): Travis Scott, Young Thug, M.I.A.
Franchise? Like McDonald’s? Seems legit.
ROCK ON
*Trouble’s Coming: Royal Blood
YEE HAW
*You Time: Scotty McCreery
Drinkin’ Songs: MacKenzie Porter
State I’m In (album): Filmore – Slower, Country Song, Other Girl, London
