kasual picks #44

Hello and happy New Music Friday! I decided to combine last week’s and this week’s music into one perfect playlist for your consumption. Within the last two weeks we’ve been blessed with a new era from Shawn Mendes and now an iconic collaboration between Bebe Rexa and Doja Cat. Not to flex, but there’s a great combination of slow and upbeat songs to keep your weekend going.

If you’re new here, I make weekly playlists where I pick my favorite songs from each week’s releases and I write some of my quick thoughts about them. I also curate a Spotify playlist to go along with them. I’m all about helping people find their new favorite artists and songs so if you have any suggestions let me know!

I also made an Instagram for all my music invested peeps so feel free to check it out @kasualpicks on Instagram. I’ll be sharing my favorites in each genre on that platform so feel free to check it out! On here, however, I’ll designate my top favorites with an asterisk “*”.

Here’s the best music from the week of Friday, October 9, 2020. Find the playlist HERE. Let’s get it.

POP AND BOPS

*Wonder: Shawn Mendes

Shawn Mendes introduced us to Wonderland last week. With building production and an explosive ending, “Wonder” is the perfect addition to any workout or morning playlist to give you extra energy and motivation to tackle anything that comes your way. I’m excited to see what he brings out next on the road to his album release on December 4.

Everyone Changes: Kodaline, Gabrielle Aplin

*Hypochondriac: Sasha Sloan

With her incredible songwriting, Sasha Sloan creates a simple acoustic track that is a love song without saying “I love you.”

*Brainstorm: Alexander 23

With every new release, Alexander 23 makes us fall in love with his music more. According to Alexander, “Brainstorm’ is about how difficult it can be to communicate how you feel when you’re in a really dark place.” When these feelings are hard to describe, this song is the perfect comfort track to play.

dusk EP: mxmtoon – bon iver, show and tell

With her new EP, mxmtoon features her beautiful and soothing voice through a mix of relaxing tracks.

The Jump: Tiny Deaths

This dreamy new song from Tiny Deaths examines the question “does fame attract rotten people or does the fame itself rot them?” The minimalistic song packs a punch through echoing instrumentation, delicate vocals and scintillating synths, emitting a cinematic atmosphere.

Isabella (with Lucy Dacus): Hamilton Leithauser, Lucy Dacus

*Officer of Love: Caamp

This song live. HITS.

The Other Side: Julian Daniell

Hailing from Boulder, Colorado, Julian has a unique musical style that blends Americana and folk with elements of ’60s soul and rock, and its shining element is lyrics that tell a story in a poetic style. His newest track, “The Other Side,” has an introspective feeling to it that will have you envisioning sitting on your back porch and looking out over a vast lake thinking of simpler times.

*Setting Sun: Cristóvam

Inspired by his hometown in the Azores islands, Portugal, Cristóvam showcases jangly guitars, soaring synths and a foot-stomping rhythm in this new track. His soulful vocals provide a nostalgic and sincere feeling that listeners can cling on to, finding solace in his lyrics.

One of my favorite groovy songs from this week’s playlist.
