10 TV Shows You NEED To Watch

First off, hello! I went on an extremely long blog hiatus because I was absolutely swamped with college applications and after spending hours writing about myself, I just couldn’t find the motivation or inspiration to write. As motivation to finish, I promised myself that I could only post on my blog if I finished my college apps.

Yeah that totally didn’t work.

I pretty much just procrastinated extra hard and although I did finish all my applications, I kinda neglected y’all. BUT I’M BACK! And definitely better than ever.

One reason that I may have taken literally forever to finish my applications is because I’d totally split screen my laptop and have Netflix or CW or some other website playing a TV show as background noise or whatever. Which was cool. Except for the fact that I’d write a sentence and then to reward myself for the hard work, I’d totally watch 6 episodes of Friends. I’m awesome I know.

I love movies and I love films. They’re inspiring. They’re hilarious. They’re sad. They’re just cinematic masterpieces. But TV shows hold a special little place in my heart. There’s something about binging a show and seeing the Netflix “Next episode will start in 10…9…8…7…6…5…4…3….2…1” that brings me joy and happiness. You get to see characters develop over seasons and years and there are hours of content to make you laugh, cry, feel all warm and fuzzy, scream at the screen, and more.

Anyways, here are the 10 TV Shows that made my 2017

In the beginning, I simply refused to watch Friends. I was like nah that show is for old people there is no way that I’m going to be caught watching that like I can’t even relate to them NAH. But after hearing from so many people that it’s golden, I decided that MAYBE I’d check it out because all my other shows were on hiatus. Then in my government class, we watched an episode of Friends because we had nothing to do in class and

I.

WAS.

HOOKED.

It took me under two months to finish all 10 seasons.

I watched it nonstop.

My phone wallpaper is a picture of Chandler and Joey riding in on the dog statue (iykyk).

I now follow ten fan pages on Instagram. No shame.

The story centers around a group of friends living in New York in nearby apartments with varying jobs. Some are related by blood or high school friendships but Chandler, Monica, Joey, Phoebe, Ross, and Rachel are always there for each other through thick and thin. Ten seasons equate to ten years of their lives and it’s just addicting. The show finished airing in 2004 but everything they go through is still somewhat relevant today.

I finished the show yesterday and did I cry? You bet your sweet butt I did.

I also lowkey want to rewatch the whole show from the beginning again.

I also highkey want to move to New York and have a group of friends like that.

Who’s with me?

Friends made me laugh and cry and everything in between. At times I was screaming because a certain “couple” were doing some stupid things and other times I was audibly saying “AWWWWWWWW,” but honestly, the show is absolutely indescribably perfect.

When I was younger, The Office first aired on television and I would sneak out of my bedroom when I was supposed to be asleep to watch it. That’s how dedicated I was.

When I watched it for the first time a year or two ago (I honestly can’t remember because I’ve seen it so many times now), it made me laugh nonstop and it still does just as much today.

The story is filmed documentary style and is centered around the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company employees. It’s filled with office pranks, love stories, basketball rivalries, business troubles, and more. When you stop and think about it, it’s a wonder how they make any profit with such a dysfunctional group of misfits but it just all works under their best boss, Michael Scott.

The Office is just one of those iconic things that you’ll watch anytime it’s on tv or reference in daily conversation because it’s just that great. It’s perfect for a wide range of ages from teens to those who actually work in offices very similar to Dunder Mifflin, and despite its end in 2013, people from all over can relate and enjoy its slapstick comedy.

A must-watch for sure.

GLEE was first introduced to me when I was nine by my aunt who was babysitting me and my siblings at the time. It mayyyyy or may not have been age appropriate for me at the time, but when I watched it for myself years later in preparation for my first year in high school, I fell in love.

The group of misfits struggling to survive the dangerous waters of high school bullies and keep their precious glee club afloat from those who would seek to destroy it, aka champion cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester, completely took my heart. Their covers of popular songs are legendary and it was amazing to see each of the diverse characters develop and find themselves over time with the help of their teacher Will Schuester.

The show ended as my freshman year ended and GLEE helped me realize that I could in fact conquer high school while being myself.

It also made me realize that I totally needed to be a part of my school’s theater program asap.

Although it started to drag a bit towards the end, GLEE will always have a special place in my heart and if you love music and perfectly choreographed impromptu awesomeness or High School Musical-esque storylines, GLEE is the perfect show for you.

Parks and Recreation is just like The Office, but less…dark. The political satire that is Parks and Recreation is also another mockumentary just like The Office, but instead circles around the life of a very upbeat and hardworking Leslie Knope who is just trying to make her little town of Pawnee the best it can be.

Parks and Recreation is just simply hilarious. With actors such as Aziz Ansari, Amy Poehler, and Chris Pratt making you cry with laughter to falling in love with Nick Offerman’s harsh meat-loving Ron Swanson or Aubrey Plaza’s dark April Ludgate, the cast of Parks and Recreation will take you on a wild ride of humor as you root for Ann Perkins to finally get her pit filled!

Game of Thrones is simply a cinematic masterpiece. It’s a television show but it also seems like a never ending movie based off of the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin. In the beginning of the show, I was worried about having to remember the plethora of characters and myriad of places, but as the story progresses, it’s easy to remember who is who.

Plus everyone knows that characters are constantly dying (if you didn’t I’m sorry but now you know) so the list of characters gets shorter and shorter.

Game of Thrones is a constant roller coaster of emotions and you just can’t help from rooting for the House of Stark to prevail and wonder who will be sitting on the Iron Throne next to rule the Seven Kingdoms. With extensive backstories and alliances being made and broken, Game of Thrones keeps you on the edge of your seat.

The show itself is extremely well made with amazing costumes and sets as well as an incredible story line. If you have the time, I suggest that you invest in this show. I destroyed my sleep schedule this past summer watching it, but it was well worth it. The show has brought me to full on sobbing at some points, but trust me, it’s worth it.

The last season comes out in 2019, so you have a whole year to catch up! Do it.

Plus Kit Harington is adorable.

If you haven’t seen it, You know nothing Jon Snow.

Sherlock is a modern adaptation of the well known detective stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is without a doubt one of my favorite television shows of all time because of how well it’s made and its dynamic storyline. Every time I watch an episode, I’m always amazed by Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman’s incredible acting skills that never fail to blow me away.

With fantastic villains such as Adam Scott’s Jim Moriarty or the annoying Phillip Anderson as well as the adorable Molly Cooper or the incessant nagging of Sherlock’s older brother Mycroft Holmes,  Sherlock is full of rich and developing characters that give the show amazing laughs as well as bring you to tears.

I have completely fallen in love with this “consulting detective” and his flat mate John Watson and it makes me sad that Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are so busy doing other movies and shows that they cannot continue this amazing show. Sherlock is another rollercoaster masterpiece that is well worth the watch.

Rick and Morty is a nonstop comedy following the interdimensional adventures of cynical Rick Sanchez and his timid grandson Morty Smith. The show is straight up hilarious, but it’s definitely not for all ages.

Originally a short parody of Back to the Future, Rick and Morty combines ultimate randomness with an interesting storyline as you accompany the pair on their wild adventures through the different dimensions and domestic life. Not only struggling with his grandfather’s shenanigans, Morty also struggles with his parents and his typical high school crush while proving that life isn’t easy for a 14 year old. Even his older sister Summer accompanies the two on their adventures, but it’s everyone who joins in on roasting their father, Jerry Smith.

Rick and Morty is just a good time.

Jane the Virgin centers around the life of religious Jane Villanueva who finds herself accidentally artificially inseminated after promising her grandmother to save herself for marriage. To make it even better, the biological father is then a married man, cancer survivor, former playboy, owner of the hotel where she works, as well as her former teenage crush.

Sounds like a good time? You bet it is.

As the story goes on, Jane finds herself involved in a love triangle or two or three and she must decide to follow her passions or stay safe in her current job all with a baby on the way.

I originally found this show on Netflix because I was bored and needed something to watch and my friend needed someone to talk about it with, but now I’m absolutely hooked and I watch each episode as it comes out each week.  #teamRafaelalways

Besides just being a romance and drama, Jane the Virgin is also hilarious and just a great show that tugs on your heart strings and keeps you rooting for Jane to succeed through all her struggles.

I began watching Riverdale on a whim simply because KJ Apa appeared when I rolled my mouse over the Riverdale rectangle on Netflix. It’s that simple.

Using the characters from the Archie Comics, Riverdale focuses on the lives of the “core four” or KJ Apa’s Archie Andrews, Lili Reinhart’s Betty Cooper, Camila Mendes’ Veronica Lodge, and Cole Sprouse’s Jughead Jones. Each of them has their own struggles to deal with but it takes all four of them to help solve the issues going on in their little town of Riverdale.

With Riverdale, you never know what is going to happen next with its constant plot twists. Chilling backstories and past history come up as Betty rebelliously works as an almost modern Nancy Drew to solve the mysteries going on in Riverdale.

Plus who doesn’t love seeing KJ Apa playing the guitar or hearing Josie and the Pussycats sing new songs? Riverdale pretty much has everything from music to love triangles.

What has started out as a whim has evolved me into a dedicated fan as I’m dying 6 out of the 7 days of the week to see what happens next.

I pretty much can’t go to my Instagram explore page without seeing Riverdale season two fan theories.

It’s great.

Watch it so we can debate over who we think did it.

13 Reasons Why has gotten a lot of complaints throughout the year for how graphic it was or how it seemed to glorify suicide, but I included it in my list because it was a show I watched in 2017, the message was great, and 10 shows just sounds cooler than 9.

The mystery drama centers around quiet teen Clay Jensen who receives a collection of thirteen tapes that explain the thirteen reasons or circumstances why his friend Hannah Baker ended her life. It’s full of mature content and addresses subject matter prevalent to today’s society and culture.

It has been renewed for a season two and although I’m not quite sure what it’ll be about, I’m interested in what comes next. The show itself makes you think about how your actions and words have an effect on the people around you. You never know what their day has been like or what their life is like so you don’t know how your small comment or what situation may affect that person.

13 Reasons Why had me on the edge of my seat during each episode and I was very interested in what came next. So much so that sometimes waiting for the 10 second countdown on Netflix just wasn’t fast enough.

 


And that’s it! 10 tv shows that I think everyone should watch because they’re just iconic and entertaining and wonderful and they’ve taught me a thing or two. A majority of them I watched in 2017, but not all of them (trust me I’m not THAT lame) so if you have time in between absolutely killing 2018 and need something to relax to, I say check a few of these out. 🙂

    I love pets. I have two beautiful thai cats called Tammy(female) and Yommo(male). Yommo is 1 year older than Tommy. He acts like a bigger brother for her. 🙂
