new music friday vol. 1

one of my favorite things in the world is music. and as much as I love my faves, I love finding new songs and new underrated artists. it can be kinda hard to find new music out that you’ll actually enjoy because of the large amount of songs that are dropped so I’ve decided to give a lil shoutout to some of my favorite artists with new songs each week. plus I’ve written my thoughts under each song while i’m listening to it so this list isn’t extremely long but the reviews are as long as it takes me to listen to it if that makes sense. also don’t flame me because I’m terrible at describing music.

i’m also including a link to a spotify playlist I’ve made with all of these songs on it at the end of the post so feel free to check that out as well. you can listen along as you read (i recommend this).

this week was FULL of new music. all different types. chill bops to certified bangers arriving just in time for rave season. underrated artists to well known artists exploring and trying something new. I’ve organized them a little bit so you can find what you’re looking for easily. here’s the new music from the week of friday june 28, 2019.

chill bops you can jam to

inner monologue part 2: julia michaels – 17. hurt again. priest. fucked up, kinda ft. role model.

I was a huge fan of inner monologue part 1 so I knew I had to check this out as soon as it dropped. it was a difficult choice, but my favorites from this album include “17,” “hurt again,” “priest,” and “fucked up, kinda” ft. role model. I also adore role model so I knew that song would be amazing but per usual he exceeded expectations. I love the line “but I’m not a priest, so f*ck your confession” in the song priest. iconic. I only included these four in the playlist, but check out the whole album because it really does slap. “I keep falling for boys and mistaking them for men,” yes julia, just yes. “falling for boys” and “work too much” get an honorable mention so I added them. and “body.” just listen to the whole thing lol.

superposition: daniel caesar ft. john mayer

my man daniel really came through with a WHOLE ALBUM today, but seeing john mayer made me listen to this song first. their voices work perfectly together to mold a beautiful song. “if I should die before I wake,” play this song on my funeral playlist pls.

closer to you: clairo

this song is just so chiiiiiiiiiiiiiill. it’s so vibeyyyy. this song just has all the vibes. I don’t know what else to say about it except you need to listen to it.

dancing with your ghost: sasha sloan

SASHA SLOAN WOW LOVE HER. this song is beautiful and her voice is beautiful and she’s just beautiful. sasha sloan is one of my favorite songwriters so when i saw she dropped this song today i knew it needed to be on this list. with this song she paints a picture in your head with her lyrics and you know we love an artist.

holding you, holding me: laureline

I adore this title because it’s just so…intimate. I know I say this a lot but this song has all the chill vibes. all the harmonies. all the vibes. all the love. check it out.

paradise: souly had

this song is, dare I say it, so chill. I would throw this song on my sunday morning wild brunch playlist if I had such a playlist. I want someone to slow dance with me in the kitchen to this song while our pancakes burn to a crisp on the stove. bring on the mimosas.

heartbreak magic: riah – the whole darn ep. i cant pick a fave.

HIGHLY UNDERRATED ARTIST RIGHT HERE PEOPLE. now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, y’all really do need to check out riah. this entire ep is written beautifully and deserves all the praise it gets and more. you might know her from her most popular song “lie,” but I can assure you, you NEED to check out this ep and give it the love it deserves. you will not be disappointed. will be listening to it forever.

ooh la la: josie dunn – ooh la la, same, mute

I’d never heard of josie before this but after hearing her newest songs I’m definitely going to have to check more of her music out. she dropped three songs last night and ALL of them are bops that I will definitely have stuck in my head for the rest of the day. I highly recommend her and can’t wait to see her blow up because she deserves it. ooh la la

better than i used to: illiterate light – better than i used to, carolina lorelei

I’d never heard of these two dudes but i’m very glad I found these two songs they dropped today. these songs are very chill but i’m also dancing? they might be some of my favorites from this week. “every time i think of youuuuu, i feel better than i used toooo.” catch me sending that to my crush next week. will be definitely adding these two songs to my surf n skate playlist asap.

nostalgic (filous remix): a r i z o n a

this remix is sooooo chill and a great addition to yalls chill playlists. as a very nostalgic person I feel like this song speaks to my soul and im very here for it. the original song is amazing but this remix gives it even more of a dance feel which I love.

my backwards walk (from tiny changes: a celebration of frightened rabbit’s ‘the midnight organ fight’): harkin and sarah silverman

this song is slightly unusual compared to the rest in this list but im a big fan of it. the song itself feels like it’s constantly building the whole time until the climax at the end. you just have to listen to fully understand what im saying. it’s the sh*t and im knee deep in it.

more upbeat bops

night in: retro video club

I love the name of this group and I definitely think they deserve more credit for today’s bop they brought out. it’s a little more intense than a chill bop but I’m a HUGE fan already and I can’t wait to see what else they bring out after this new single. I would give them the world for sure.

losers: frawley

this song and artist are veryyy underrated. this song may be about losers but it freaking wins. I love how frawley uses the iconic line “i’m a loser baby so why don’t you kill me” from beck but with her own twist and replaces “kill” with “kiss.” love this song and can’t wait for more from frawley.

money problems (acoustic): max frost

yo this song hit a lil TOO CLOSE TO HOME. as a broke kid I felt this on a spiritual level. the original song is wonderful, but this acoustic version is just beautiful with max’s voice and his guitar with that chorus in there too. I highly recommend the original song as well!! I too have “got nothing in my pockets” but I don’t judge you max. thank you for making me feel less alone king.

hate me (with juice wrld): ellie goulding

my girl ellie has returned with this amazing song which is indeed something new for her and we’re here for it. her and juice wrld are a fantastic combination i never thought i would need and i’m pleasantly surprised.

rap

push it: kevin gates

for all my rap guys and gals, this song dropped last night and i’m a huge fan. for those unfamiliar and basic like me, you might know this guy from his song “2 phones.” whether you like rap or not, I would still recommend giving this song a listen because the beat itself is still pretty fire.

calabasas: skizzy mars

it’s chill. it’s a vibe. I’m down. I was too busy dancing along instead of writing this review lol. I would consider this to be less really intense rap because it has more of a chill vibe so that’s why it could be under the chill bops category but place it where you will in your favorite playlist immediately.

fast (remix): sueco the child feat. offset and a boogie wit da hoodie

now this song got my head bopping back and forth. I actually felt cool listening to this song. adding offset and a boogie wit da hoodie to this song just made it even better. i may have also hit the woah in my room and lost all the acquired coolness.

rave szn

so am I (martin jensen remix): ava max

I didn’t thing song could get any better but then remix dropped and I can’t wait to hear this song at my next rave. this song makes me feel less alone and it makes me want to get up and dance through my loneliness. I too am a little crazy for this song.

open my mouth (dwilly remix): kiiara

kiiara’s song “gold” is one of my favorite songs ever so when I saw she dropped something new I was immediately intrigued. this remix is SO GOOD y’all im not exaggerating at all. the original song is amazing but the remix just makes it unbelievable. will be listening and dancing along to this ALL DAY. I will not be saying EVERYTHING about this song.

higher love: kygo and whitney houston

you may already know kygo and whitney but i love his new song that dropped today that included a rework of the song “higher love” that whitney houston covered and recorded but never released. I love her voice with his signature dance beat. this song will definitely get any party dancing AND singing along.

have mercy (softest hard remix): ybn cordae

this song goes HARD. the original song is a bop but this remix just came out today and im here for it. I could totally see myself jumping up and down insanely to this song at a music festival. ybn cordae also dropped a new song recently with chance the rapper which is also worth checking out as well. I love chance so I knew I had to include this song here and the playlist as well.

don’t wanna dance: boston bun

disagreeing with this title, this song does make you want to dance. a lot. boston bun came out with two versions of this song including an extended mix for when you want to dance party to go on even longer.

room to fall: marshmello, flux pavilion, elohim

with big names like these three together, you know this song is DEFINITELY going to kill it. just released today, this song goes so hard. the perfect trio. it’s everything you could you want in a song like this.

flying on my own: céline dion or the remix by dave audé

miss céline did not come to play today!!! the remix and song are both so equally good I can’t decide which one I like better so I included both. please please PLEASE go check out this song because it’s SO different from other songs she’s known for and I LOVE IT.
