Happy New Music Friday! This week we were blessed with a new album from Glass Animals, Victoria Monét AND Luke Bryan. If you’re new here, I make weekly playlists where I pick my favorite songs from each week’s releases and I write about them. I also curate a Spotify playlist to go along with them. I’m all about helping people find their new favorite artists and songs so if you have any suggestions let me know!
I also made an Instagram for all my music invested peeps so feel free to check it out @kasualpicks on Instagram. I’ll be sharing my favorites in each genre on that platform so feel free to check it out! On here, however, I’ll designate my top favorites with an asterisk “*”.
Here’s the best releases from the week of August 7, 2020. Let’s get into it! Find the playlist HERE.
INDIE & CHILL
*cloudy: joan – want u back, magnetic, cover girl, love me better
cloudy is full of upbeat indie pop songs about love. While we’ll be jamming to the whole thing in it’s entirety because of how well it flows, our favorite songs are “want u back,” “magnetic,” “cover girl,” and “love me better”! We’re obsessed with the summer vibes each song brings and the catchy lyrics and tunes that will be stuck in our head all day. Plus we can’t stop thinking about the lyrics “our love’s a front page story” in cover girl. So cute and so creative.
Summer Is Over: Alec Wigdahl
Shout out to Alec Wigdahl for reminding me that summer is almost over. But at least we have this track to give us that summer feeling throughout the seasons to follow.
Paralyzed: Washed Out
*Chosen Last: Sara Kays
A cute yet sad song about being picked last in P.E. class.
*Lie: Sasha Sloan
This week Sasha Sloan releases the first track from her debut album to be released this fall 2020. With brilliant writing and a catchy tune, Sloan once again has drawn in with anticipation for her newest record.
*How To Move On: THE WLDLFE
*Farther We Go: Walk Off The Earth
Getting Older: JukeBox The Ghost
AUATC: Bon Iver
American Dream: Claire Ernst
This week Claire Ernst releases a track that’s part political statement and part work of art. BLM always. Find resources to help here.
I Had A Love Song (feat. VanJess): Ant Saunders, VanJess
POP AND BOPS
*Rager Teenager: Troye Sivan
as your new teen angst anthem, “Rager Teenager” is the latest single to be released in anticipation for Sivan’s new EP In a Dream which will be released Aug. 21. This song follows two other bops, Easy and Take Yourself Home. “Rager Teenager” is a moody track that will fill you with main character energy and fuel your late night adventures and wandering thoughts. We’ve grown up with Sivan since his YouTube days and are excited to hear more about his current stage of life in his newest EP.
*BACK FOR ME: Reece
A lil savage, a lil spicy. But a catchy bop so good I had to listen to it twice before moving on.
Monte Carlo: Remi Wolf
“Monte Carlo” follows the release of her newest EP last month I’m Allergic to Dogs! This week she brings us a fun summer and catchy tune that we just had to include in this week’s playlist.
Want You Bad: Saturn Lane
Staten Island born Saturn Lane comes at us full force this week with her new song “Want You Bad.” Drawing influence from artists like Ariana Grande, Bebe Rexha, Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift, Saturn Lane proves she has the talent to find her own place with these pop stars with this new release.
Sad Songs: SHY Martin – Can I call you back?, Are you happy?
This new EP from SHY Martin is full of sad bops that we’ve loved and supported throughout each of our new music friday posts.
*Monsters: Kat Saul
*Goin’ Back (feat. Zac Barnett): WILD, Zac Barnett
A catchy upbeat tune that is a perfect addition to your running playlist to keep you going in the summer heat.
So Would I: Katelyn Tarver
*Hate U: LØLØ
goodluck: ELIO
We loved u and me, but mostly me so we definitely had to take a listen to the deluxe version which features “good luck.” It’s a mostly chill track with a pretty wacky ending that we miiiiight not be the biggest fan of since it scared me when I was listening to it this morning.
*Dreamland: Glass Animals – Dreamland, Tangerine, Hot Sugar, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Domestic Bliss
This new album from Glass Animals is both filled with childlike nostalgia and eccentric. It’s sprinkled with “home movie” interludes featuring frontman, Dave Bayley’s, mom’s voice from old clips from his childhood. This record can be seen as mostly autobiographical for Bayley with tracks like “Space Ghost Coast to Coast” about a friend he used to have who later attempted a school shooting and “Domestic Bliss” about seeing a friend’s mom in an abusive relationship at a young age. Oh how I’d love to hear this album played at a festival.
Daylight: Joji, Diplo
Daylight is the latest single from Joji’s LP, Nectar, to be released on September 25th.
clover: glaive
Freak: Doja Cat
I can hear the TikTok girlies QUAKING. It’s me, I’m now a TikTok girly who’s just as obsessed as everyone else. Shout out to our girl Doja Cat for keeping us fed while she works on other music. We love you.
R&viBe
*JAGUAR: Victoria Monét – Moment, Dive, Jaguar, Experience (with Khalid and SG Lewis)
Many may know Monét from her songwriting ability from working with artists like her best friend Ariana Grande, but this new album further proves her extreme talent! The album is so smooth and while every song flows perfectly into the next, each one brings their own vibe to the table. Even the interludes on this record are phenomenal and non-skips. From dance tracks like “Experience” with Khalid and SG Lewis to smooth and sultry songs like the title track “Jaguar” and the trumpet-filled “Dive.” Every track on this album will have you feeling confident and empowered to hop into bed with whoever you choose.
Stayback: Omar Apollo
“Stayback” is the first single from Omar Apollo’s new forthcoming album. According to Apollo in a press release, the track is about being in love for a long time but moving on from being hurt emotionally from trying to make the relationship work.
Sleep With Me: Jacob Latimore, Jagged Edge
This week, we’re obsessed with the calming sound or rain throughout this collaborative track.
RAP SNAP CRACKLE POP
Smile (with The Weeknd): Juice WRLD, The Weeknd
This posthumous release from Juice WRLD with transport you into your feels and your deep thoughts as you contemplate the now even sadder lyrics mixed with The Weeknd’s vocals.
Woodlawn: Aminé
R.I.P. Kobe.
WAP (feat. Megan Thee Stallion): Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion
The CONFIDENCE this song exudes. Some of the lyrics have me screaming (macaroni in a pot !!) and this track is also paired with another iconic music video from the two queens which can be found here and features celebrities like Kylie Jenner and Normani.
Afterlife: Flatbush Zombies
Los Angeles: Matt Lab
BLIND (feat. Young Thug): DaBaby, Young Thug
ELECTRO DANCE + RAVE SZN

ROCK ON
Mr. Prism: Psychedelic Porn Crumpets
What is described as “Acid Rock” or “the perfect music to trip to,” Psychedelic Porn Crumpets do it again with their newest track, Mr. Prism. Whether you’re planning on using it to blow your mind or you’re just looking for a song to play at full volume while skating, this is it.
Sorry: beabadoobee
The latest single from her forthcoming LP Fake It Flowers which is set to arrive October 16, “Sorry” tells the story of beabadoobee “confessing [her] mistakes in a friendship and watching someone who [she loves] breakdown and fade away as a person” as she said in a press release.
Get Out: Oscar Lang
This new track from Oscar Lang sounds like it belongs in a teen coming of age movie from the 90’s and we’re SO here for it.
YEE HAW
*Born Here Live Here Die Here: Luke Bryan – Knockin’ Boots, What She Wants Tonight, Down To One, One Margarita,
Call me a basic b*tch but I do love Luke Bryan. And he blessed us with a whole new album this week!!! “Down To One” will obviously have you in your romantic feels and “One Margarita” will have you getting crunk at your next pool party with your dog and your mom (we’re still in quarantine people). Feeling ultra basic? Play “Knocking’ Boots” at full volume on your way to get groceries as you mentally prepare yourself to avoid people.
Change Your Mind: Keith Urban
Beers and Sunshine: Darius Rucker
A summer mood.
And that’s it! I hope you enjoy and find some of your new favorite songs and artists from this playlist because I know I have. Plus I hope you discover some tunes to fuel your quarantine activities! And wear your mask over your nose!
